Alprazolam is well known and trusted as a safe and highly efficient benzodiazepine medication able of treating panic and anxiety disorders within a few weeks. When your doctor prescribes you Alprazolam therapy he or she always warns you what substances, foods and medications should not be taken with Alprazolam to avoid serious side effects and severe allergic reactions. Why so?

Never forget that Alprazolam is an active chemical causing certain changes in your body and helping your brain release natural calming substances. What is more, this chemical is able of reacting with a number of different elements found in your body that you receive with food, drinks and other medications. That is exactly why it is so important to avoid harmful chemical interactions within your body controlling what other medications you take and what kinds of food you consume.

First of all, never take your Alprazolam with alcohol! This combination has a synergistic effect, which can cause severe sedation, behavioral changes and intoxication. Alprazolam is easily dissolved in alcohol - as a result its effect sharply increases causing numerous side effects and often resulting in life-threatening overdose. The more alcohol and Alprazolam you take the worse the interaction!

Do not take Alprazolam with grapefruit juice! By the way, it is a bad habit - taking your drugs with tea, coffee, soft drinks and juice - try to wash down any medicines with water!

Never combine Alprazolam with antidepressants, seizure medications and sleep medications - they may contradict or strengthen each other causing painful and dangerous side effects!

It is not a good idea to take Alprazolam with antipsychotic medications such as Aripiprazole (Abilify), Chlorpromazine (Thorazine); Clozapine (Clozaril); Fluphenazine (Prolixin); Olanzapine (Zyprexa, Symbyax); Perphenazine (Trilafon); Paliperidone (Invega); Quetaipine (Seroquel); Risperidone (Risperdal); Thioridazine (Mellaril); Trifluoperazine (Stelazine); Ziprasidone (Geodon).

Check out not to mix your Alprazolam with any of barbiturates available: Amobarbital (Amytal); Butalbital (Fioricet, Fiorinal); Pentobarbital (Nembutal); Phenobarbital (Luminal); Secobarbital (Seconal).

Avoid using Alprazolam with other benzodiazepines to avoid overdosing and a number of health-threatening effects! The most widespread benzodiazepines available today are: Chroldiazepoxide (Librium, Limbitrol, Librax); Clonazepam (Klonopin); Clorazepate (Tranxene); Diazepam (Valium); Estazopam (ProSom); Flurazepam (Dalmane); Lorazepam (Ativan); Midazolam (Versed); Temazepam (Restoril); Triazolam (Halcion).

Alprazolam is not the best company for oral contraceptives (birth control pills) - you are recommended to think of other birth control techniques while you take Alprazolam because oral contraceptives reduce the clearance of Alprazolam. This leads to increased plasma levels and accumulation of Alprazolam in your body.

You should take Alprazolam carefully if urgent antibiotic or antifungal treatment is needed - this combination decreases the effectiveness of both medications and causes numerous allergic reactions and side effects.

Never combine Alprazolam and narcotics/opiates, such as morphine, oxycodone, hydrocodone (Vicodin). The consequences must be fatal!

Be careful combining CYP3A4 inhibitors with Alprazolam - you can receive profound sedating effects! The point is that they lead to a delayed clearance of Alprazolam causing its excessive accumulation. This may result in excessive sedation (overdose) and other dangerous side effects associated with excessive intake of Alprazolam.

Bear in mind that combination of Alprazolam with the herb Kava can lead to the development of a semi-comatose state. As for Hypericum, it lowers the plasma levels of Alprazolam and reduces its therapeutic effect.

Make sure you have informed you doctor about all other medicines you can take including mainstream medicines, vitamins, herbal supplements etc. and your Alprazolam treatment will be efficient and safe!
